Too Young To Be Old- Catena Rondo

This poem is written for Penmuse -Pemnancy’s November 2024 Poetry Event. The poem is of the type ‘Catena Rondo’

Here’s how to write a catena rondo:

  • The poem is comprised of a variable number of quatrains (4-line stanza)
  • Each quatrain has a rhyme pattern of AbbA
    • The capital letters mean the same word, a repeat.
    • Each stanza will have different repeated words
  • The second line of each quatrain is the first line of the next quatrain
  • The final quatrain should repeat the first quatrain word for word
  • There are no rules for meter, syllables, or subject matter. Just a lot of rhyming refrains.

The gullible, endearing child of yore is back

In my casual conversations and actions

Nonchalant about propriety and people’s reactions,

The gullible, endearing child of yore is back.

In my casual conversations and actions

I act not like a new bride, careful and fair

I fulfill a long-time wish to fly my kite in free air

In my casual conversations and actions.

I act not like a new bride, careful and fair

Nor fear, for the birds in my nest have long flown,

My heart beats free and wild, for myself alone

I act not like a new bride, careful and fair.

Nor fear, for the birds in my nest have long flown

The gullible, endearing child of yore is back

My room fills with light coming through a little crack

Nor fear, for the birds in my nest have long flown.

The gullible, endearing child of yore is back

In my casual conversations and actions

Nonchalant about propriety and people’s reactions,

The gullible, endearing child of yore is back.
